Meeting Update
Combined Meeting of the BMLA and
Lasercare
Birmingham 10-11 November 2005
Organised: Dr Sean W Lanigan
The BMLA in combination with Lasercare provided
a joint scientific meeting at the Postgraduate Centre, City
Hospital, Birmingham in November 2005. This was an excellent
scientific meeting which extended over a day and a half
with parallel sessions.
There were three half-day courses available
for attendees. Harry Moseley, Dundee, organised a Core of
Knowledge course which was approved by the BMLA and complied
with the requirements of the UK (MDA 1995) and EU (IEC 1999).
In addition, Carol Goodman, Dundee, organised a course "Skin
Laser Essentials for nurses and other staff". Finally
a course organised by Sean Lanigan, Birmingham, the local
organiser, was offered on "An Introductions to Dermatological
Laser Therapy: Basic principles and clinical practice".
On the first morning there was a scienfitic
session with free papers on recent developments in photodiagnosis
which was organised by Professor Hugh Barr, and Nick Stone,
Gloucester. Papers presented in this session were of the
highest quality. The other choice for attendees that morning
was the Lasercare dermatology session which offered an overview
of many of the recent advances in this rapidly expanding
field.
All delegates then met together for the BMLA
invited lecturer. Dr Rolf Markus Szeimies, from the University
of Regensburg, gave an excellent lecture on "Photodynamic
therapy applications in dermatology: Back to the Future".
In the afternoon, in addition to the nursing
course, Dr Szeimies chaired a scientific session organised
by Dr Caroline Sudworth, Liverpool, with free papers on
photodynamic therapy/laser light applications, and a satellite
symposium generously sponsored by Shire Pharmaceuticals,
the manufacturers of Vaniqa, took place on "Dealing
with the problems of excess hair". In the evening,
a most enjoyable dinner took place at The Bank restaurant
in the heart of Birmingham's canal district, which was enjoyed
by delegates and faculty alike.
The meeting finished on the Friday morning
with the dermatology laser therapy course co-chaired by
Sean Lanigan and Daron Seukeran, Middlesborough and the
second parallel Lasercare dermatology session, chaired by
Dr Harland, Sutton, which again offered high quality up-to-date
overviews on recent trends.
The meeting was considered a great success
by all attending. Over 100 delegates attended the meeting
which was sponsored by: Cross Medical, Cutera, Cynosure
(UK) Ltd, Euromedical Systems Ltd, Lasercare Clinics, Laserscope
(UK) Ltd, Lynton Lasers, Shire Pharmaceuticals PLC, Springer
Ltd.
The meeting was also generously sponsored
by Springer, who provided a handbook for all the delegates.
Abstracts from material submitted at the meeting were published
in Volume 20 number 3-4, 2005 of Lasers in Medical Science,
pages B1-B20. The meeting was projected to make a small
surplus and a charitable donation arising from this will
be made to the BMLA shortly.
Annual BMLA Meeting in association
with Yorkshire Laser Centre
Leeds 11-12 May 2006
Organised by Dr Mark Stringer
The BMLA in association with the Yorkshire
Laser Centre provided a joint scientific meeting at Weetwood
Hall, Leeds in May 2006. The meeting offered a forum for
open scientific and clinical studies across a range of disciplines
relating to laser and light therapies, and optical methods
of diagnosis. The "Core of Knowledge" laser safety
course was also run in parallel by Harry Moseley.
Day one comprised of a series of review lectures
that introduced the development of laser and optical technologies,
the status of the Medical laser/light market, with examples
of specific clinical applications of such technologies.
In the afternoon, delegates were invited to a guest lecture
depicting the use of MRI guided laser treatment of recurrent
glioblastimas by Wenholt von Templehoff of the Krefeld Medical
School, Dusseldorf. This was followed by a wide range of
presentations relating to clinical studies and the safe
use of lasers for medical treatments. The evening was topped
off by the Conference Dinner in the Manor House at Weetwood
Hall.
Day two was filled with guest lectures and
presentations relating to photodetection and photodynamic
therapy. Invited lectures from Heinrich Walt (Zurich, Switzerland)
and Dominic Robinson (Rotterdam, The Netherlands) concentrated
upon aspects of PDT light delivery, detection and treatment
monitoring, whilst Stan Brown (Leeds, UK) introduced early
clinical results for anti-microbial PDT. Interspaced between
these guest lectures, presentations were witnessed by delegates
on aspects of clinical PDT treatments, synthesis of new
photo-activated compounds and a range of optical diagnostic
techniques. The meeting was brought to a close by the announcement
of awards for best presentations over the two day period.
Winners can be found near the top of this newsletter.
The 2-day meeting saw over 140 delegates,
and was generously supported by exhibits from Springer,
Lynton Lasers, Wigmore Medical, Laser Physics UK, Lumenis
(UK), Biolitec, and Axcan. An abstract handbook for all
delegates was produced by Springer, and will be published
in volume 21 of Lasers in Medical Science, 2006.
